Applicant Tracking

Just as you might use artificial intelligence in the job search and application process, so can your potential employer. Employers may use AI with Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) to help them sift through thousands of resumes.

What is ATS?

Think of ATS as the bouncer of the job application process. The system constantly programs, scans, and sorts through resumes based on set criteria by the company. In other words, the ATS searches for keywords in your resume to suggest your application to the hiring manager.

Why do companies use ATS?

Larger companies like Google and Microsoft reported receiving over 50k to 70k resumes weekly. ATS streamlines and manages the recruitment process when there is a high volume of applicants, focusing on finding the best candidates for the position. So, how many companies use ATS? Take a look at these stats:

  • 98.8% of Fortune 500 companies reported using ATS in 2023.
  • 66% of large companies and 35% of small organizations rely on using ATS.
  • 36% of small to medium-sized companies (maximum of 100 people) have adopted the software for their recruitment process.

How can I optimize my resume for ATS?

Integrate keywords from the job description into your accomplishments, leadership experience, and skills.
Use clear, straightforward titles for each section of your resume: “Education,” “Experience,” and “Skills.”
Flesh out each role with bullet points that hit on skills and keywords that mirror the job description.
Quantify achievements with numbers and data whenever possible.
Use reverse chronological resume format to ensure the ATS identifies all sections and information clearly.
Don’t use complicated graphics, tables, or columns. Stick to standard word processing features.
Don’t use unusual fonts. ATS-friendly fonts include Arial, Calibri, Cambria, Garamond, and Georgia.
Don’t forget to check your PDF! Corrupted PDFs can prevent your resume from being processed.

Tip: Always check the PDF content by pasting it into Word. If it is corrupted, try uploading your resume as a .doc or .docx file!
